Dog Training Classes
Our extremely popular and affordable dog training classes help strengthen the bond between dog and companion and help prevent people from giving up their dogs because of poor behavior. All classes are held at the ARF Adoption Center with instructor Matthew Posnick unless otherwise stated.

Please note: Spring classes will be held at the ARF Adoption Center, 124 Daniels Hole Road, Wainscott.
DOG OBEDIENCE, BASIC, INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED
Dogs and their handlers will learn basic obedience using positive reinforcement techniques. Curriculum includes Leash Handling, Let’s Go, Turning Techniques, Stay/Stand, Sit/Stay, Down/Stay, Leave It, Come, No Jumping and Leash Pulling Prevention Exercises. Five classes for $150 ($125 for ARF dogs adopted within the last 12 months).
OFF LEASH DOG OBEDIENCE
Dogs and their handlers will learn healing off leash, long distance sit and recall, targeting skills for better control, out of site down/stay and directed off leash jumping and retrieving. **Must graduate intermediate obedience to enroll. Five classes for $150 for five classes.
Train your puppy early! It will pay off over a lifetime. Classes focus on socialization, interactive skills and simple obedience. Bring the whole family, fun for all! Five classes for $150 ($125 for ARF puppies adopted within the last 12 months).
ONE ON ONE OBEDIENCE – NEW!
Work one on one with ARF’s Dog Trainer for special attention for your exact training needs. Work at your own pace. Limited sessions available. Sessions $60 per 45 minutes or or 5 sessions for $250.

DOG AGILITY, BEGINNER & ADVANCED
Build the bond of trust between you and your dog while getting great exercise! Dogs and their handlers learn basic skills including ramps, jumps, tunnels and weave poles. Five classes for $175.
AKC® CANINE GOOD CITIZEN® CGC PREP CLASS*
CGC Prep Class is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. Five classes for $200.
THERAPY DOG PREP CLASS
Therapy Prep Class will prepare handlers and dogs for the Pet Partners therapy dog evaluation. The class will cover all the required obedience and therapy exercises that evaluators will use to determine a dogs suitability for registration as a Pet Partners therapy dog. It is recommended that participants have completed the Intermediate Obedience class here at ARF or have already taken the AKC® Canine Good Citizen course but not required. Five classes for $200.
SCENT & TRACKING CLASS, BEGINNER & ADVANCED
Have fun working with your dog at finding hidden objects and follow tracks in the great outdoors. Class is limited to 5 dogs. *Five classes for $150. (Not offered Spring or Summer)
AKC TRICK DOG CLASS
This program is designed to provide recreational training that is fun while strengthening the bond between companion and dog. Participants can pick from a list of tricks to earn novice, intermediate and advanced trick dog titles from the American Kennel Club (AKC). Practice each week and a checklist will be kept for each dog. Five classes for $200
SHY DOG SOCIALIZATION
This class is designed to help timid dogs adapt to all types of situations such as unfamiliar people, various environments, and novel objects. Progress of each dog will vary, depending on the degree of shyness, age of the dog, individual personality, and previous exposure to people, places, and objects. Four classes for $100 ($75 for dogs adopted from ARF) with instructor Dr. Barbara Pezzanite. All applicants must be approved to attend these classes. WHAT TO BRING
- 6 foot long leash, not wider than one inch. No Flexi Leads allowed!
- Collar that fits the dog securely.
- Appropriate footwear. No sandals please!
Note: Group Classes are not usually suitable for dogs that have serious behavior problems, such as aggression toward people and/or other dogs.
