Adoption requirements

ARF Hamptons Adoption Requirements

At ARF, every adoption is designed to set animals and families up for success. To ensure a safe, healthy match, we follow a few simple guidelines:

Veterinarian Verification

If you already have pets at home, ARF contacts your veterinarian to confirm they are spayed/neutered and current on required vaccines (DA2PP & Rabies for dogs, FVRCP & Rabies for cats).

Why:
Staying up to date on vaccines protects both your pets and the new ARF puppy or kitten, who may still need additional shots. We also check spay/neuter status because mixing altered and unaltered animals can lead to stress, behavior issues, and long-term health risks.

Dog Meet & Greet

If you have a dog at home, ARF requires a meet-and-greet—either at the ARF Adoption Center or at an ARF off-site event—handled by ARF staff.

Why:
Meeting on neutral ground helps us see how the dogs respond to one another and gives everyone the best chance at a smooth, successful transition.

Family Meet & Greet

We encourage all members of the household to meet the animal before adoption. Some animals may require a full-family meeting due to medical or behavioral needs, and this will be noted in their profile.

Why:
It’s important that the animal feels comfortable with everyone, and that the match fits the family’s lifestyle. These meetings help us spot any concerning behavior and ensure a good long-term fit.

Landlord Verification

For renters, ARF must confirm with your landlord or property manager that pets are allowed, or you may bring a lease that includes a pet clause.

Why:
Some rentals have size, or pet-limit restrictions. Confirming ahead of time protects you and prevents future housing issues for the animal.

Age Requirement

Adopters must be 21 or older. If you live with your parents, ARF must speak with them to confirm approval for a pet in the home.

Why:
A successful adoption relies on everyone in the household being prepared and able to care for the animal—emotionally, physically, and financially.

Pet surrender fee

Animals are admitted to ARF by appointment only and after a surrender request has been reviewed and approved by our Shelter Director. Request a surrender of a dog or a cat using these online forms. ARF staff will be in contact. ARF staff will be in contact.

We are a private, not-for-profit organization and receive no government funding. The required surrender fee of $250 helps cover the costs of caring for your pet until a new home can be found. Please ask us for more information if you cannot afford the surrender fee.

ARF prides itself on providing the best possible care for your animal including high-quality food, veterinary care, a warm place to sleep and plenty of exercise and training. Any donation in addition to the surrender fee is most gratefully appreciated.

Donate to ARF

ARF’s work is only possible because of the dedication of our staff and Board leadership, the generosity of our volunteers, and supporters like you who believe every cat and dog deserves a champion. Together, we make a real difference for animals who have nowhere else to turn.
