Keeping Your Pet Safe this 4th of July
The Fourth of July can be one of the most dangerous days of the year for pets. To ensure the safety of the pets at ARF, the Adoption Center is closed on July 4th. And here are some tips to keep your pet safe.
As families across the East End prepare to celebrate Independence Day, ARF Hamptons reminds pet owners to take extra precautions to keep their furry family members safe during the holiday.
The Fourth of July can be one of the most dangerous days of the year for pets. In fact, more dogs go missing on July 4 than any other day of the year. The loud noises, bright flashes, and unexpected sounds from fireworks can be frightening for animals, causing many to panic and run away in search of safety.
While fireworks are a cherished tradition for many people, they can be overwhelming and terrifying for pets. ARF Hamptons encourages pet owners to leave their pets at home during fireworks displays and other loud celebrations. Crowded events and sudden noises can create stress and anxiety, even for pets that are normally calm and confident.
To help pets feel secure, owners should prepare a quiet, comfortable, and escape-proof space inside their home where pets can relax during fireworks. Keeping windows and doors closed, drawing curtains, playing soothing music, and providing familiar toys or bedding can also help reduce stress.
ARF Hamptons also encourages pet owners to prepare now by ensuring their pets are microchipped. Microchipping is one of the most effective ways to reunite lost pets with their families. ARF offers free microchipping for cats and dogs throughout the year. Reservations are required and can be made at arfhamptons.org.
Fourth of July Pet Safety Checklist
- Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with current identification tags.
- Confirm your pet's microchip registration is up to date. If your pet needs a microchip, or you are unsure if they have one, contact ARF.
- Keep pets indoors during fireworks and outdoor celebrations.
- Create a quiet, secure room with familiar bedding, toys, and water.
- Close windows, doors, and curtains before fireworks begin.
- Play calming music or television to help mask loud noises.
- Exercise dogs earlier in the day before festivities start.
- Keep pets away from barbecue foods, alcohol, fireworks, sparklers, and glow sticks.
- Never leave pets unattended outdoors, even in a fenced yard.
- If your pet experiences severe anxiety during fireworks, consult your veterinarian in advance about possible treatment options.
To ensure the safety and well-being of the animals in their care, ARF Hamptons will be closed to the public on Saturday, July 4. ARF staff and dedicated volunteers will be working throughout the day to care for the shelter’s cats and dogs and help them feel safe and secure during what can be a stressful and unsettling holiday.
The shelter will reopen for adoptions on Sunday, July 5, at 11 AM.

"A little preparation can make all the difference," said Kimberly Nichols, Executive Director and CEO of ARF Hamptons. "Taking simple precautions before the fireworks begin can help ensure your pets remain safe, comfortable, and at home where they belong."
