LemonARF Returns for Summer 2026 and Invites Kids to Help Fuel a New Mobile Adoption Van

LemonARF Returns for Summer 2026 and Invites Kids to Help Fuel a New Mobile Adoption Van

LemonARF is just like a traditional lemonade stand, but with a lifesaving twist. ARF Hamptons is asking kids to help “Fuel Our Mission” by raising money for a brand-new Mobile Adoption Van.

ARF is excited to welcome children and families back for another summer of LemonARF, the organization’s beloved kid powered fundraiser that helps homeless cats and dogs in need.

LemonARF is just like a traditional lemonade stand, but with a lifesaving twist. Kids throughout the Hamptons and beyond set up lemonade stands in their neighborhoods and donate the proceeds to ARF Hamptons to help care for the more than 1,000 animals that come through the ARF Adoption Center each year.

This year, LemonARF participants are taking on a very special mission. ARF Hamptons is asking kids to help “Fuel Our Mission” by raising money for a brand-new Mobile Adoption Van.

For the past 14 years, ARF’s current Mobile Adoption Unit has traveled across the Hamptons, Long Island, and surrounding communities helping thousands of rescue dogs and cats attend adoption events and find loving homes. After more than a decade on the road, the vehicle is showing significant wear and tear and is spending more time in the repair shop than at community events.

With the support of LemonARF kids and the community, ARF hopes to purchase a new and improved Mobile Adoption Van that will safely transport animals, expand outreach efforts, and help even more pets get seen, loved, and adopted.

ARF has already secured the first $200,000 toward the project and is now working to raise the remaining $200,000 needed to put a new van on the road.

Every LemonARF participant receives a special fundraising kit filled with everything needed to host a successful stand, including homemade lemonade and cookie recipes, customizable menus, cups, ARF stickers and tattoos, donation mini bank, and more.

Most importantly, LemonARF is all about kids having fun while making a real difference for rescue animals. Participants are encouraged to get creative by selling homemade treats, artwork, jewelry, and other items at their stands. Every child who participates and brings their donation to ARF will also be featured on ARF Hamptons social media.

“LemonARF gives children the opportunity to become part of the ARF family while learning the importance of kindness, compassion, and giving back,” said Kimberly Nichols, Executive Director and CEO of ARF Hamptons. “This year, every cup of lemonade sold will help keep our rescue mission moving forward.”

Together, this summer’s LemonARF participants can help keep ARF on the road and continue bringing rescue animals one step closer to forever homes.

Free starter kits are available at the ARF Adoption Center in East Hampton.

Cool Tips for A Hot Summer!

Cool Tips for A Hot Summer!

As the temperature is on the rise be sure to keep these tips in mind to make sure your pet is safe while having fun in the sun!

As the dog days of summer approach and the temperature is on the rise be sure to keep these tips in mind to make sure your pet is safe while having fun in the sun:

• Both cats and dogs can become dehydrated quickly—fresh drinking water is always a must! Keep several bowls scattered around the house.  A little added ice can make for an even more refreshing drink.

• If pets are outside during the day, be sure to provide a shaded place for them to relax in. If it’s just too hot, keep pets indoors to enjoy some air conditioning or the cool tiles on your bathroom or kitchen floor.

• A great haircut is an important part of looking your best during the warmer months. The longer hair on dogs should be trimmed, but don’t have them shaved; the layers of dogs’ coats actually protect them from overheating and sunburn. Cats should be brushed more often to help keep them cooler.

• Enjoying the pool? Have fun but be sure to keep an eye on your pet. An unsupervised cat or dog around deep water can result in tragedy. If dogs are taken out on a boat, they should always be wearing a life vest—just like you!

• If your cat is an apartment dweller or just loves to sit in front of an open window, be sure to have appropriate screens on the windows and secure them firmly.

• Save your walks with your furry friend for the early morning or evening hours. Not only can the midday heat dehydrate your dog, but also their sensitive paws can easily burn.

• Check for ticks! Even when anti-tick and flea preventatives are used, those little buggers can find a way to latch onto your pet. A thorough search after every walk is a good routine to get into.

Do not leave your dog or cat alone in your car under any circumstances. Even with the windows rolled down, your vehicle can become as hot as an oven in just a few moments. Leaving an animal unattended in cars in extreme weather is illegal in certain states.

• Have fun! Just remember to keep everything in moderation. If it looks like your pet has had enough of the great outdoors, go back inside, where it’s cool. Sometimes, just “chilling out” can be the best activity for everyone.

Keeping Your Pet Safe this 4th of July

Keeping Your Pet Safe this 4th of July

The Fourth of July can be one of the most dangerous days of the year for pets. To ensure the safety of the pets at ARF, the Adoption Center is closed on July 4th. And here are some tips to keep your pet safe.

As families across the East End prepare to celebrate Independence Day, ARF Hamptons reminds pet owners to take extra precautions to keep their furry family members safe during the holiday.

The Fourth of July can be one of the most dangerous days of the year for pets. In fact, more dogs go missing on July 4 than any other day of the year. The loud noises, bright flashes, and unexpected sounds from fireworks can be frightening for animals, causing many to panic and run away in search of safety.

While fireworks are a cherished tradition for many people, they can be overwhelming and terrifying for pets. ARF Hamptons encourages pet owners to leave their pets at home during fireworks displays and other loud celebrations. Crowded events and sudden noises can create stress and anxiety, even for pets that are normally calm and confident.

To help pets feel secure, owners should prepare a quiet, comfortable, and escape-proof space inside their home where pets can relax during fireworks. Keeping windows and doors closed, drawing curtains, playing soothing music, and providing familiar toys or bedding can also help reduce stress.

ARF Hamptons also encourages pet owners to prepare now by ensuring their pets are microchipped. Microchipping is one of the most effective ways to reunite lost pets with their families. ARF offers free microchipping for cats and dogs throughout the year. Reservations are required and can be made at arfhamptons.org.

Fourth of July Pet Safety Checklist

  • Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with current identification tags.
  • Confirm your pet's microchip registration is up to date. If your pet needs a microchip, or you are unsure if they have one, contact ARF.
  •  Keep pets indoors during fireworks and outdoor celebrations.
  •  Create a quiet, secure room with familiar bedding, toys, and water.
  • Close windows, doors, and curtains before fireworks begin.
  • Play calming music or television to help mask loud noises.
  • Exercise dogs earlier in the day before festivities start.
  • Keep pets away from barbecue foods, alcohol, fireworks, sparklers, and glow sticks.
  • Never leave pets unattended outdoors, even in a fenced yard.
  • If your pet experiences severe anxiety during fireworks, consult your veterinarian in advance about possible treatment options.

To ensure the safety and well-being of the animals in their care, ARF Hamptons will be closed to the public on Saturday, July 4. ARF staff and dedicated volunteers will be working throughout the day to care for the shelter’s cats and dogs and help them feel safe and secure during what can be a stressful and unsettling holiday.

The shelter will reopen for adoptions on Sunday, July 5, at 11 AM.

For more information about free microchipping services visit arfhamptons.org.

"A little preparation can make all the difference," said Kimberly Nichols, Executive Director and CEO of ARF Hamptons. "Taking simple precautions before the fireworks begin can help ensure your pets remain safe, comfortable, and at home where they belong."

In Memoriam: Zoe Kamitses

In Memoriam: Zoe Kamitses

For decades, Zoe dedicated her life to making the world a better place for animals and the people who love them.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our dear friend and longtime ARF Board member, Zoe Kamitses.

For decades, Zoe dedicated her life to making the world a better place for animals and the people who love them. Her compassion, determination, and unwavering commitment to animal welfare helped shape countless lives across the East End.

As the founder of ARF's Operation Cat program and the Southampton Dog Park, Zoe created lasting programs that continue to improve the lives of animals every single day. Through her tireless advocacy, she helped stabilize feral cat colonies, champion responsible pet care, and create safe spaces for dogs and their families to enjoy.

Many knew Zoe through her beloved therapy dog, Charlie Dickens, an ARF rescue who brought comfort and joy to patients at Southampton Hospital and children at Camp Good Grief. Others knew her as the dedicated foster who opened her home and heart to hundreds of kittens over the years. While she loved them all, Sticky, who was featured at ARF's Bow Wow Meow Ball in 2023, held a particularly special place in her heart.

Most recently, there was Zeke. When few believed he would ever find a home, Zoe did. She welcomed him into her life and worked with patience, consistency, and unwavering dedication to help him succeed. Alongside her partner Susan, she saw the dog he could become and gave him the chance he deserved. Today, Zeke has been happily home for more than a year and a half because Zoe and Susan believed in him when it mattered most.

Zoe’s passion, honesty, and ability to make things happen left an indelible mark on our organization and our community. We are deeply grateful for the many years Zoe devoted to ARF and for the extraordinary legacy she leaves behind. Her impact can be seen in every animal she helped rescue, every life she touched, and every person she inspired to do more for animals in need.

Zoe will be greatly missed, but her spirit lives on through the programs she built, the animals she saved, and the community she helped create.

Our hearts are with her family, friends, and all those whose lives were blessed by knowing her. Zoe's legacy will forever be a part of ARF's story.

 The Kit Kat Fund

The Kit Kat Fund

The Kit Kat Fund was established by Michael Dehn Breault and Gordon H. Hoppe to honor Kit Kat, a retired show dog and beloved Miniature Schnauzer who offered unwavering love, support, and companionship.

Sophie was an ARF rescue who survived the horrors of a puppy mill as a young pup and struggled to transition to life outside that cruel environment. Kit Kat became her best friend and was instrumental in helping Sophie adjust.

Kit Kat tragically died too soon, and the Kit Kat Fund was established in her memory, to encourage and support puppy mill survivors and those who care for them, and to provide financial support for senior and medically complex animals.

Kit Kat’s legacy will shineforever as a testament to the power of love, reminding us that every dog can make a difference.

Please consider a donation in honor of Kit Kat and in honor of all those like her, that remind us that dogs and cats can sometimes be the best therapy for one another.

Kit Kat Fund Recipients Available for Adoption

Consider giving a home to one of these deserving animals.

Daisy, 8-years-old

Daisy has loads of love to give! She came to ARF as a surrender, and is now looking for a new place to call home. Daisy is very affectionate and loves to give kisses. She is also smart as a whip and is eager to learn more. Daisy does have some anxiety, so she takes her time getting comfortable with new people, but once she knows you’re her friend, she’s a big mush! Due to her anxiety, a calm home with children over the age of 12 is recommended. Daisy doesn’t always want a canine companion around, so a thorough meet and greet is a must. If you’re looking for a best friend in a dog, look no further; Daisy is your girl!

Daisy is currently living in a foster home. If you are interested in meeting her, please contact the adoptions team at adoptions@arfhamptons.org to set up an appointment.

Miss Pickles, 4-years-old

Miss Pickles is a gorgeous Pit Bull Terrier who loves people and loves to give kisses! She was found as a stray in October 2024. It appears that she was left in a wooded area in Springs to fend for herself before being brought to East Hampton Animal Control and then to ARF. This survivor with a heart of gold and a BIG personality is known for serenading staff and volunteers with her adorable squeaks and noises. Miss Pickles is dog selective, so a meet and greet would be necessary if she were to have a canine sibling. She also requires a special diet due to allergies. Come meet Pickles and you will find it impossible not to fall in love with her!

If you are interested in meeting her, please contact the adoptions team at adoptions@arfhamptons.org to set up an appointment.

Countless lives changed. Because of this INCREDIBLE community, we are beyond grateful to share that we met our $50,000 match for the Community Giving Challenge!

Thank you to every person who donated, volunteered, shared our mission, left encouraging words, or helped spread the word. Every act of support came together to create something truly life-changing for the animals who depend on ARF Hamptons.

Your generosity means more rescues, more medical care, more full bellies, more safe nights, and more second chances for homeless dogs and cats.

Animals have a remarkable way of bringing out the very best in us. They comfort us, inspire us, make us laugh, and remind us what unconditional love looks like. This week was a beautiful reflection of that love in action.

A very special thank you to Dick McCabe for generously sponsoring our Community Giving matching gift in loving memory of Chipper. Your compassion and support helped make this extraordinary week possible.

From all of us at ARF Hamptons, and from every animal whose life will be changed because of this community, thank you for believing in our mission and standing beside us for the animals who need us most.

There is still time to donate! Please make your gift today.
