The Kind That Changed Your Heart Forever

Celebrating the special bond between ARF adopters and the cats and dogs that stole their hearts!

Jocko’s Love – Est. 2024

“We knew Jocko was our soul dog from the moment we brought him home. He is the sweetest, most affectionate, and dare I say the handsomest boy I think there ever was. We couldn’t imagine our days without him – our nature walks, playtime on the beach, bird/deer/turkey watching together, endless cuddles – and of course, watching his relationship with his cat sisters whom he loooves to corncob. Our love for Jocko is truly boundless. We’re grateful everyday for our family at ARF, for their hard work and dedication to rescuing these sweet souls, and for bringing Jocko into our lives.”

– Remy & Thomas Barrow, Jocko’s Forever Family

Espresso’s Love – Est. 2025

“Espresso is my best friend and also my baby. I’m a Cat Mom. I love him because he always cuddles with me and lets me give him belly rubs and he has so much energy”

– Hazel, 3-years-old

“Hazel and Espresso became instant best friends. When Hazel is home they are pretty much inseparable. Espresso gets a front row view of all the fun toddler activities!”

– The Karl Family, Espresso & Croissant’s Forever Family

Hoagie’s Love – Est. 2023

“In 2023, we had just moved out east and were brand new to the Hamptons. We adopted Hogan almost immediately, and it was the best decision we’ve ever made. He’s goofy, energetic, affectionate, and always brings the party. He makes every day an adventure whether it’s going to the beach, hiking, swimming, romping on the golf course, curling up in front of the fire, or meeting up with his brother, Lando (former ARF rescue). We love him beyond!!!”

-Alex & Keith Clawson, Hoagie’s Forever Family

Dante’s Love – Est. 2024

“Dante’s story started with a different name. At the shelter, he was known as Jake. I went to ARF one morning to meet a specific dog I had already applied for, but when I arrived, he was meeting another family and ultimately went home with them. The staff kindly encouraged me to walk through the small dog room and see if another dog caught my heart.

That’s when I saw this little guy jumping up and down like Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. I walked away but instantly came back to him. After taking him out for a walk, I knew right away he was meant to be mine.

Jake became Dante, and he is the most wonderful little dog. He’s silly, incredibly loving, and oh so intelligent. I’m endlessly grateful to ARF for the love and care they give to every animal, and especially for taking such great care of my little dude until he found his forever home”

– Jessica Alvarracin, Dante’s Forever Person

Brynn’s Love – Est. 2014

“I adopted Brynn (then Melody) from ARF in 2014 on a total whim. I was tagging along with a friend who was looking for a dog at the time.

That said, when I saw her, it was love at first sight. They put her in my arms and she melted on my shoulder in a puddle of purrs. I decided I couldn’t leave her so made the spontaneous decision to take her home. We enjoyed the 3 hour ride on the jitney back to the city together. 🙂 Since that day (Brynn is 11 years old), she has always been by my side. She’s truly my best friend. She has seen me through breakups, health challenges, moves- all of the highs and lows of life.

I’m so glad I took a chance on that beautiful little tuxedo kitten. She means the world to me!

Grateful to ARF always for bringing her into my world.”

– Lisa Mayernick, Brynn’s Forever Person

Rocky’s Love – Est. 2021

“Rocky was surrendered to ARF in April of 2021, where he was treated for a double eye infection and underwent enucleation surgery to improve his QOL. He was 11 years old, considered a senior special needs adoptee. We adopted him in October of that same year, driving from Upstate NY to the Hamptons to bring him home.

After 6 hard months of helping him learn to trust us, Rocky became my little shadow and joy. Rocky always wanted to be where I was, figuring out where the front door was so he could meet me there (or try to leave with me for work!) after work. Rocky’s favorite pastime was roaming around in the backyard, getting stuck in bushes and finding his way out. His favorite toy was his stuffed elephant, and he would bury him in his bed. Rocky was truly an example of how love can be blind. He was our goodest boy.

Rocky passed away over the summer, and we miss him every day. Thank you ARF, for taking a chance on us to give Rocky a safe landing for his golden years.”

– Katie & Kevin Smith, Rocky’s Forever Family

Blanche’s Love – Est. 2020

“In April 2020 we were settling into lockdown and I found myself on ARF’s page. I saw Blanche and had such a strong feeling that I needed to meet her. She’d been found in a warehouse with puppies, all of whom had been adopted. I fell in love with her gentle energy, and so has everyone else who’s met her. Something about her is just magic—and I’m not biased! People stop me all the time so they can hug her. She’s been the biggest blessing for me, and spreads light to everyone she meets. Thank you ARF!”

– Amalia Graziani, Blanche’s Forever Person

Lochlan’s Love – Est. 2025

“In May of 2025 we adopted our sweet boy, Lochlan, from ARF. He is a survivor of the fire at the Happy Cats Sanctuary, a tragedy that hit close to home for my husband and I, having lived just down the road. As cat lovers, we wanted to do something to help, so we drove up from our new home in Virginia to add one of the surviving Happy Cats to our family.

We knew the moment we met Lochlan that he was the one. He was understandably timid after all he had been through. But with love and patience, he soon warmed up to us. It wasn’t long before he was sleeping in our bed, cuddling on the couch, and watching squirrels out our bedroom window. He loves his four cat siblings, but his true love is my husband. He is happiest and most at ease in my husband’s arms and they bring each other so much joy. Lochlan has been the most perfect addition to our family and we are so thankful to ARF for being the bridge that connected us.”

– Brittany & Scott Twining, Lochlan’s Forever Family

Rita’s Love – Est. 2023

“It was love at first sight, the moment we saw Rita’s picture on ARF’s website December 2023!

She is absolutely the sweetest, energetic, petite pup. Rita brings love, joy, and excitement to all that know her. She loves her human friends as well as all animals she meets… a real “Dr. Doolittle.” She enjoys traveling in the car, or playtime with her toys.

Thank you to ARF for rescuing her from South Carolina and bringing her to the Hamptons!!”

-Rodney Foreman & Meredith Hulse, Rita’s Forever Family

Jameson’s Love – Est. 2024

“Crow now Jameson came to us from the ARF van at Kidd Squid when he was about 2 months old. We fell in love with his inquisitive face. His eyes are so expressive and he makes us laugh every day with his goofy and loving nature. There is not a mean bone in his body. Thank you ARF Hamptons for bringing him into our life.”

– Gayle Heine, Jameson’s Forever Person

Mack’s Love Story – Est. 2023

“At the time, my fiancé and I had been very casually looking at dogs in shelters when we came across a picture of Mack and his sister posted on the ARF Instagram page. We instantly fell in love with him, and texted Bridget (who I used to go to school with!) and said I needed to meet him ASAP. She helped set that up for us, and it was love at first sight. He was spunky and so playful. We took him home that day, and that was the beginning of the best chapter of our lives.

My middle school students got to suggest names for him and we ultimately chose Mack. We got married a year later, and Mack was right there by our sides. He’s provided us with laughter beyond measure, and everyone he meets falls in love with him. He’s been the best thing to ever happen to us. Thank you for giving us such an amazing dog!”

– Jacqueline & Brendan DiSunno, Mack’s Forever Family

Jake’s Love – Est. 2022

“I never knew love could arrive on four tiny paws—until Jake. He is my very first dog, and somehow, he introduced me to a type of love I didn’t even know existed. The kind that is pure, instinctive, and unconditional. Jake’s love is the type of love that changes you forever.

I first met Jake on a rainy Saturday afternoon, just minutes before ARF’s closing time. It was almost 4:00 PM when I stepped into the ARF adoption trailer, greeted by the sound of barking and crying puppies in their cages. Then I saw him. At the time, his name was Soto—a beautiful little, white-furred baby, standing on his hind legs, reaching out as if he somehow knew I was there for him. I asked if I could hold him. The moment they opened his cage, he climbed straight into my arms, rested his tiny neck on my left arm, and fell asleep. Just like that. My heart cracked wide open and my eyes swelled with tears. Because it was closing time, we were told to come back first thing the next morning if we were truly interested—puppies, after all, are adopted quickly.

That night, my fiancé Marc (now my husband), who has had dogs his entire life, talked honestly with me about how life-changing it is to adopt a dog. How everything shifts—your freedom, your routines, your priorities. He wasn’t sure we were ready, and thought this was not the right time. I understood… but I was heartbroken. I cried myself to sleep, mourning a puppy who already felt like mine. The next morning, I went through the motions of my usual routine, trying to accept that I wouldn’t be at ARF right when they opened. I was working out when Marc came downstairs, looked at me, and said the words that changed everything: “If you really want him, let’s do it.” I told him it was too late. It was already 10:45 AM. ARF opened at 11:00. Surely he’d be gone by the time we arrived. Marc didn’t hesitate. “Let’s just go. Don’t change. Get in the car.” We rushed to the garage and drove straight there.

When we pulled into the parking lot, my heart sank. There was already a line forming by the adoption truck. We parked, ran to the back of the line, and waited as family after family chose their puppy. A couple lined up right behind us. One by one, puppies were adopted. And then it was our turn. Soto was the only puppy left. I couldn’t believe it. I scooped him out of the cage and held him tight, my heart racing. Had we arrived even thirty seconds later, he would have gone home with the couple behind us. But he didn’t. He came home with us.

We left ARF and went straight to the pet store, filling our cart with everything our new family member could ever need. When we finally arrived home, Jake was ecstatic—running in joyful circles, hopping into his dog bed, zooming around the house like he couldn’t believe this was real. Neither could I.

Jake is now almost four years old, and not a single day goes by that I don’t thank the universe for bringing him into my life. I work from home, and he has become my constant companion—my four-legged soulmate. We spend hours cuddling, and somehow, I know what he needs without him ever having to ask. He is the sweetest dog I could have ever dreamed of—something even Marc agrees with, having had dogs his entire life. Jake knows when I’m happy. He knows when I’m sad. And no matter what, he’s right there—pressing into me, offering comfort without words. He follows me everywhere. Sometimes he is afraid of his own shadow, and especially of thunder and garbage trucks. When fear strikes, he runs straight between my legs, trusting me completely to keep him safe. And I always do.

Jake is my whole universe. Because of him, I am a different person. I now understand a love that is raw, genuine, and endlessly loyal—the kind of love that asks for nothing and gives everything. This Valentine’s Day, my love story isn’t roses or candlelight. It’s white fur, sleepy cuddles, and a puppy who chose me as much as I chose him. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.”

– Jordana Marchese & Marc Gross, Jake’s Forever Family

Bella & Carmine’s Love – Est. 2017

“Bella came to us as a foster. I was very clear with the adoption coordinator that we could only keep her two weeks and that I absolutely would not be adopting a dog. The coordinator just nodded yes with a bit of a twinkle in her eye.

Two weeks turned into four years as my husband and I could not bring ourselves to return this sweet, charming, gentle 12-year-old senior who got along so beautifully with our cats – there is not a single moment we would trade with her. Bella was so grateful, as a senior, to be adopted and she fit perfectly into our feline family. We loved her more than words could ever say.

Carmine’s name at ARF was Casanova, because he was such a lover boy. Every week I visited him my heart broke that this distinguished 16-year-old senior was still waiting for a home —overlooked time and again because of his age. We already had four cats and now a dog and I truly did not want to adopt another but seniors have a way of pulling at your heart and the next thing I knew, he was in a pet carrier in the car. As the two elder statesmen in the house they were the best of buds.

These two seniors gave us immeasurable joy and love. Please don’t overlook the older ones—they are hidden gems, just waiting to change your life.”

– Pat & Mike Franzino, Bella & Carmine’s Forever Family

Luna’s Love – Est. 2025

“We sadly lost our 2 fur babies within a year of each other to heart disease. We thought that was it… no more fur babies for us. But as time passed, I realized how much they add to our lives. So, we headed over to ARF Hamptons and walked a few pups… still not sure.

As I walked into the lobby the ARF volunteer talking to my husband was holding a 4-month-old black little terrier mix named Zarina who was just rescued from a kill shelter in Louisiana. I got closer and as I looked into her soulful eyes I was consumed with pure puppy love. That was it… she was the one.

As I sit on my couch now writing this with her warm body cuddled next to me I am so grateful that I followed my gut and my daughters’ words “you both need a dog in your lives!!” So we now have Luna, her new name. In Roman tradition, Luna was the divine embodiment of the moon, a goddess who drove her chariot across the night sky. Our Luna drove her chariot of healing love straight into our hearts which were so broken by the loss of our precious dogs Jax & Ziggy last year.

Luna loved ARF puppy kindergarten, especially playtime. She is so smart & house trained at 5 months and the most playful spirit ever. She loves everyone. Springs Dog Park is her happy place. She runs over to every dog no matter the size wanting to play. Then runs to the people offering them lots of puppy love. She comes when she hears me call her name no matter what she is doing or how far away she is. She flies back to me & sits for her treat. I must admit we sometimes call her Lunatic laughing as she goes play crazy.

We are in Florida with her now & she loves coming on bike rides with us and letting her crazy puppy spirit out at the dog beach.

We can’t thank ARF enough for all they do for so many animals & humans. Luna is an amazing bundle of joy…and the best Christmas gift ever.”

– Tony & Roey Ficaro, Luna’s Forever Family

Gracie’s Love – Est. 2014

“Gracie is my first cat. My mom adopted her in 2014 from an ARF truck at the Strawberry Festival. She climbed on top of her friend in the cage to look us in the eye, and we were hooked! Shortly after, I was asked to kitten-sit her for a couple of months. When my mom got back and took her home, I said “bring me back my cat”.

She is my baby, my best friend, the love of my life. Gracie is not only gorgeous, but she is the sweetest…and sassiest when she wants to be (which is often). She makes me laugh every single day with her antics, or the side eye she loves to give me. Always judging. Oh, and the girl loves a wig! She sleeps all day until it is time for me to go to bed of course, then has me up at 5am on the dot…usually by meowing my name (I swear she does!)…and I wouldn’t change any of that for anything.

Thank you ARF for bringing this angel into my life and for all that you do for rescue. I don’t know what I would do without her.“

-Laura Petro, Gracie’s Forever Person

Hamilton’s Love – Est. 2019

“When we first saw Hamilton at ARF in August of 2019, he was a shy three-month-old puppy from South Carolina. We fell in love instantly with his sweet personality and the equally sweet white stripe down his nose. His unique black-and-white coloring, along with his careful, thoughtful nature, made him impossible to resist. He was good-looking and serious, and we knew right away he was meant to be ours.

Hammy has truly become the heart of our family. He was housebroken from day one (thank you, volunteers!) incredibly well-behaved, gentle, and quiet. He never makes a fuss. One of his sweetest qualities is how softly he takes treats from your hand, as if he’s worried about hurting you.

He loves playing with other dogs and enjoys meeting new people. His favorite toy is a rubber chicken that lets out a very loud honk when bitten, much to everyone’s amusement as it echoes throughout the house.

Hammy has never missed an ARF walk and insists it’s his favorite day of the year. He also loves dressing up for Halloween, and Christmas is definitely his favorite holiday.

Hammy is a true gentleman. Part black lab, he enjoys lying at your feet and staying close, but he also appreciates his personal space. He rarely barks unless there’s a real reason to be concerned. Part hound, he does have a strong prey instinct, so squirrels and rabbits should mind their business. He can go from zero to thirty in seconds if something darts out of a hole or scurries up a tree, and he once even managed to grab a few feathers off a turkey before it took flight!

Despite this high level of “wolfiness,” he coexists peacefully with two large guinea pigs in our apartment, proving he knows when to be reasonable. Hammy is a lover, not a fighter.

Now 7, he’s happiest when the whole family is together, curled up in a cozy room watching a good movie.

He loves a good steak from Wolfgang’s and his favorite resting spot is a roomy George Smith sofa or chair, though he will reluctantly accept a dog bed if absolutely necessary. A city-and-country dog, Hammy has sophisticated tastes, but is still a Southern boy at heart. He loves nothing more than a good stick and long walks in the woods or along the beach. Daddy often takes him to the Springs Dog Park, Wyborg Dog Club, or Central Park, where he can run happily off-leash for hours.

Hammy is endlessly grateful to ARF for saving him from a terrible fate and giving him a second chance at life. We are just as grateful to ARF for bringing this handsome hound—and so many other wonderful pets over the years—into our hearts and enriching our lives with every special moment. We love Hammy, and we love ARF!”

– Kathleen & Rainer Kirchgaessner, Hamilton’s Forever Family

Roman & Kendall’s Love – Est. 2024

“In early 2024, after losing our two beloved cats who had been with us for 15 years, our house felt unusually quiet. Then a friend of a friend sent me a photo of four kittens who had just arrived at ARF. The second I saw it, I knew. I pointed straight to the orange kitten and said to my husband Jason, “That one is ours. We have to go meet him.”

When we got to ARF, it was love at first sight all over again. Roman’s huge eyes (I call them his anime eyes) and his positive vibes energy completely won us over. He is a purring machine, to the point that he literally walks around the house purring all day. We call him our little “wiggle bean.”

We originally thought we might adopt one kitten, but that plan lasted about five minutes…

Once we met Kendall, it was obvious these two brothers were meant to come home together. Kendall is pure intensity in the best way, an athlete who (literally) climbs the walls, chases his ball nonstop, and keeps the energy in our house at a different level. He’s like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible.

They’ve brought back the fun, the movement, and the cuteness in our home. And they’ve even taught us that they know tricks. Roman catches treats in his mouth (he can catch 20 in a row), and Kendall catches them with his paws. They make us laugh every single day.

We’re grateful to ARF for bringing Roman and Kendall into our lives and for the care your team puts into every animal. We also deeply appreciate the work you do with rescues and feral cats. It’s clear how much everyone at ARF cares.”

– Michele Evans & Jason Niemi, Roman & Kendall’s Forever Family

Dahlia’s Love – Est. 2013

“A love letter to my Muffin,

My angel Dahlia came into our lives in June of 2013. Many years ago I had found out I was allergic to dogs and cats. Even though I had a deep love and life long connection with animals, I had just moved into a beautiful apartment in Noyac and I didn’t think it was the right time for a dog especially one that wasn’t hypoallergenic. For fun I visited a few shelters to meet some of the available animals always keeping an eye out for a possible companion but, in the back of my mind I thought I wasn’t ready for such a commitment.

On my first visit to ARF I bypassed the puppies in the front room to meet the older dogs as my mind was set on attempting to adopt an older animal if I was going to adopt at all. I didn’t connect with any of them and began to leave. In a crate on her own was a sweet, quiet, and mild mannered 4 month old black and white puppy named “Dragonfly.” The front desk volunteer had a litter of other puppies next to her that were very rambunctious + vocal and through the yips she said that Dragonfly has yet to make a peep!

I started reaching my fingers through the crate and she raised her paw to mine. I knew I couldn’t leave her and right then and there we became family. Shortly after bringing her home, I changed her name to Dahlia, because she reminded me of the dark precious flower.

She crossed over the rainbow bridge in September of 2024. We scattered her ashes along with dark colored Dahlia petals across her favorite sniffing spots including a trail off of West Neck, Towd Point bay beach, + an ocean beach in Southampton, Maidstone Beach near my home, and mine and my parents yards where she would take daily walks with my parents and their cat JD. JD passed away just a few months before her on Valentine’s Day of 2024 🙁 who we also miss dearly.

Throughout her life she was my “muffin” and “scent selector” for my candle business, my mom’s “soul dog,” my dad’s “blanket sharer,” and their cat JD’s “Frenemy” (they loved each other and you could always find them by each other’s side but, they also had to have their little disputes).

She loved other dogs and would whine from across the beach in hopes of making a new friend even for a fleeting moment. She was shy with new people but, that only strengthened our bond. It made us feel so special that we were her “pack” and that she trusted us wholeheartedly. She understood humor and made us laugh every day. She was a beach girl who loved rolling in the sand and frequented almost every ocean and bay beach on the East End. Trail walks were part of our winter routine and her grandparent’s house became her happy place.

I truly believe she was put into my life for a reason and the funny thing is my late Aunt loved Dragonflies (which was Dahlia’s original name) and a symbol my family looks for in remembrance of her. Ironically as well, my allergy to other dogs remained the same but, I had divinely become immune to Dahlia.

Through the years Dahlia’s gentleness and sensitivity blossomed into wisdom and caring. I would always say that she was just – ALL LOVE not a hurtful bone in her body. She has been the biggest love of my life and I will always miss my sweet Muffin.”

– Brittany Torres, Dahlia’s Forever Person

Lexi’s Love – Est. 2024

“Sitting in my home back in the winter of 2024 I felt there was something vital missing and knew exactly what it was — a dog! I hightailed it over to ARF (no pun) that afternoon to meet some dogs…. enter Lexi. After having been surrendered twice in her four years of life I knew I would be able to offer her a forever home with a forever-open heart. Since then Lexi has been my partner in hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, quiet woodland walks and snowy morning strolls. Lexi and I participated in all the wonderful ARF training classes to strengthen our developing bond and refine my understanding of canine language — which I desperately needed. We have each gained a forever companion thanks to ARF and their steadfast guidance and support along the way. Thank you ARF!”

– Robin Katz, Lexi’s Forever Person

Bailee’s Love – Est. 2014

“We always tell people that Bailee adopted my husband…

We had recently lost our dog Sly who we had for 17 1/2 years and we were ready to add a new fur baby to the mix… Sly was a small dog and I really wanted another small dog so when we at the Pet Expo in Allentown PA on an early February Saturday, we went into the ARF van to see who was there…

While I was still visiting the babies in the van, my husband went back out and started petting this adorable yellow lab mix with he name of Bailey…. My husband was on the floor petting her through the gate of the enclosure she was in…. After a few minutes we were ready to go and as my husband started to get up, Bailee put her two front legs through the enclosure and wrapped them around my husband… Seriously… The lady that was standing next to me said: I think your husband was just adopted… And the rest is history…

Another person who had witnessed this interaction came over to me as we were completing the adoption paperwork and handed me 20 dollars…. She said that she had seen what happened and she couldn’t believe we were adopting Bailee and she wanted to buy her the first bag of food…. I tried not to accept the money, saying it wasn’t necessary, but she waked away…

That was 12 years ago…. 2014…. And we have LOVED every second of our time with Bailee… We now call her our miracle dog…. She is almost 14 and in December of 2024, we were told she had cancer throughout her body and that she didn’t appear to have much time left and to be prepared…

14 months later, Bailee is still here, loving life and being spoiled…. She is our precious angel and we have ARF to thank…”

– Shira & Scott Yacker, Bailee’s Forever Family

Bean’s Love – Est. 2021

“I’d wanted a dog for years. The kind of wanted that quietly follows you around, that shows up every time you pass someone walking a happy, wagging blur down the street.

Back in 2021, my husband Erik and I were out in the Hamptons for a few days. On a whim, we decided to visit ARF. Neither of us had ever even set foot in a shelter before. We told ourselves it was just a visit. Just to look. No real intention of adopting. Famous last words.

A kind and patient woman named Bridget greeted us and asked what kind of dog we were looking for. We didn’t have a breed or size or anything specific in mind. We just said, “Not a puppy. A boy. And a gentleman.”

She smiled like she knew something we didn’t. “Come back tomorrow,” she said. “I have your dog.”It felt oddly specific. And a little magical. So we came back the next day. And that’s when we met Bean.

Back then, his name was Mikey. He was just over a year old. A little scruffy, pretty thin, very shy (but also quite regal), sitting there like he was trying very hard to make a good first impression. But it was his eyes. His eyes told us everything. They basically said, “If you bring me home, I promise I’ll do my best to be a good boy.”

My husband was also very clear about one thing: he didn’t want a dog that begged. Not for food, not for attention, not for anything.

So while we were getting to know him, Erik started gently petting him. At some point, Erik got distracted and stopped mid-scratch.And the dog didn’t flinch. No pawing. No whining. No dramatic little performance.

He just stayed perfectly still and looked up at Erik with those big, soulful eyes, like, “Hey… if you don’t mind, I was really enjoying that.” Quiet. Patient. Hopeful. And somehow, in that tiny, wordless moment, we both knew. The dog was ours.

After we met him, Erik and I went to dinner at The American Hotel. And honestly? We didn’t even really talk. Not about life or work or anything normal. We just volleyed dog names back and forth across the table like a very intense, very nerdy tennis match.

Dash? Hmm. Garrett? Maybe. Then one of us said, “Well … he’s skinny. Like a string bean.” Bean? Yes. Bean it is.

By the time the check came, he already had a new name and we already knew we were taking him home. And he hasn’t just been a good boy. He’s The World’s Best Dog. (Yes, I know everyone says that. But in our case, it’s objectively true.)

His greatest loves, in no particular order: treats, meticulously de-stuffing every toy like it’s a full-time job, belly rubs, carpet rubbies, the armrest on our couch (his throne), snoozing, cheese (any kind), snow days, his friends, his friends’ moms and dads, his bed, Cheerios, the beach, sand rubbies, our bed, his Grammy, and – mysteriously – old snow that’s definitely been peed on.

He’s also taught us things we didn’t expect a dog to teach: patience, protection, how to celebrate the tiniest moments and how much joy can live in something as simple as a walk around the block.

Now, when he’s not home (at a playdate or the groomer) the house feels noticeably emptier. Too quiet. Like something essential is missing.

We’re endlessly grateful to Bridget and to ARF, not just for Bean, but for the work they do. Every time we go back, we’re reminded how kind and passionate everyone there is and how much they truly care about these animals.

If you’re even thinking about adding a furry one to your family, go visit them. We went in just to look. We left with Bean. Best unplanned decision we’ve ever made.”

Sanford Marcus & Erik Johnson, Bean’s Forever Family

Rocky & Rambo’s Love – Est. 2014

“I had lost my Rottweiler recently and had heard from an ARF staff member that there were 2 Rotties at ARF just rescued from a puppy mill. My then boyfriend Bobby (now husband) called ARF to set up a time to meet the pups – that’s when I knew we would be in trouble. We fell in love instantly! Full disclosure, they were a lot to handle at first, but well worth the effort. Rocky and Rambo were our world. They have since crossed over the rainbow bridge, but our time with them was precious.

Thank you ARF for bringing these special pups into our world and we continue to volunteer and support all your hard work.”

– BJ & Bobby Bowman, Rocky & Rambo’s Forever Family

Charlie’s Love – Est. 2025

“Eight month ago our lives changed forever. I am 92 and my wife was 94. For the first time in many years we were without a doggie. Elaine was not well and she suggested that she did not have much more time on this earth so we should get dog so that he could be my companion when she was gone.

I called ARF and since I am an “old dog” I asked if they had another old dog for adoption. “We have Charlie… he’s 14 but he’s like a puppy”.

The next day my brother and I met Charlie, the new love of our life. It was love at first sight. He is the sweetest dog we have ever owned.

My wife passed away 4 month ago after 66 years of marriage. He would always lay on my wife’s stomach when she rested on the coach. She loved this little guy. He is my companion now. How lucky can you get.

Thank you ARF!!!!!!!!”

– Harvey Herman, Charlie’s Forever Person

Bonnie’s Love – Est. 2021

“In October 2021, my life wasn’t the greatest. I had a job and family but mentally I wasn’t all there. That’s when my mom informed me for my 21st birthday I could have a dog of my own. A companion to help occupy my thoughts. Days upon days I was scrolling online looking for a “puppy”, when one day mom and I said “let’s just look at arf”. When we first got there I was a little devastated seeing as I wasn’t getting a full connection with the dogs we were walking and playing with.

Then, after one walk as my mom and I came back there was Bonnie, sitting/standing there. When our eyes met it was then I realized she was mine. Since then she has been my companion, my best friend and my daughter. She has taught me so much love. She helps me get out of Mental runts, she’s given me a reason. Everyone loves her, and her beautiful look??! Thank you ARF!”

Daphne’s Love – Est. 2025

“I was ready to adopt another fur baby when I saw beautiful Daphne on ARF’s Instagram (Daphne came in on a rescue flight from the South). I knew immediately she should be mine, but I was traveling and there was a chance she would be adopted before I came home. Luckily, it was meant to be! Daphne became available on my first day back. It was love at first sight, and after meeting her, I immediately brought her home.

My dearest Daphne, D.A.P.H.N.E—each letter of your name is a little charm for the way you make my world warmer and brighter.

You are my constant companion! It is a joy to see your fascination and complete concentration focused on the squirrels in the backyard, especially knowing you never knew this freedom before. I love you more than words can say, and I can’t wait to “squish” you at least ten times a day!”

Archie’s Love – Est. 2012

“I adopted Archie from ARF February 18, 2012. He was 8 months old, and one of the lucky ones ARF rescued from a southern kill shelter (with sister Veronica and brother Jughead). After a stretch without a dog I was ready. After seeing his picture and talking to the staff I drove from Manhattan in my niece’s car w my sister’s borrowed crate and it was love at first walk. (picture included) When Hurricane Sandy hit and lower Manhattan had no power I rented a car and drove down to Folly Beach, SC w Archie so I could work from a friend’s house. One morning beach walk with Archie running down the sandbar with unbridaled joy I decided we should try something new. We’ve been on Folly Beach since ’13 and the beach remains Archie’s favorite place to be. “The Arch” will be 15 in June. Before age set in we went on countless adventures, from the city to the beach to the mountains. He has welcomed two senior rescues Jesse and Peaches, a feral now inside Kitty, and Charlie the Chihuahua adopted from Charleston Animal Society. He’s the best little big brother, and my forever co-pilot with a discerning side eye. He still loves walking the beach and I cherish every step we take together. Thank you ARF for the blessing of my Archie, and for all you do to save and change the lives of animals and the humans they choose.”

Callie’s Love – Est. 2025

When I saw Callie advertised as a “Diamond in the Ruff” at ARF Hamptons I knew I wanted to meet her. Two days later I drove from my home near Boston and took a ferry then drove two more hours to ARF.

At 10 years old she was someone’s pet for her whole life until they couldn’t take care of her anymore.

It soon became clear to me that their loss was my gain.

When I brought her home my parents and my siblings were beyond excited to have a new furry family member, as we had a Wheaten Terrier for 12 years until she passed in January 2019. I soon saw that not only did Callie bring me joy, she brought smiles to the faces of my parents and my sisters.

Over the last few months we have forged a strong bond, and I can honestly say she has been an excellent dog. She’s been a great companion who always greets me at home with a wagging tale and a big smile. She is well trained and docile toward everyone she meets.

In her description online, ARF was asking for someone to give Ms. Callie the life she deserves, which I have been able to provide for her. She leads an easy, cushy life with a doggy daddy who dotes on her constantly and gives her all the snuggles and pets she could want! She takes many naps per day and has a seemingly endless supply of treats! But her favorite thing is to take naps during the day in a sunny spot near the window, or on her bed.

I highly recommend adopting a senior dog from a shelter. It will greatly improve your life in more ways than you can imagine!

Twinkle & Sparkle’s Love – Est. 2024

“In late December 2024, Olivia, my Papillion Pomeranian Mix and I stopped by the ARF Shelter on our way to the ARF Thrift Shop. I was thinking as we have been working from home since Covid, Olivia sleeping most of the day and both not moving around that much, maybe time to find a new friend for fun and excitement.

We walked into the Shelter after reading an ARF email talking about a Chihuahua named Twinkie. I was quickly informed she had come up from Texas with a friend and could not be separated. I said, OK let’s meet, thinking how long they will be there before someone will adopt two one-year-olds. They were very standoffish, only coming near me to steal cookies given to me by the staff.

So…we left with both of them, Olivia wasn’t quite sure what was happening. After a few more days in East Hampton, we traveled home to Boston by car first of the Cross Island Ferry. The “girls” were quiet and still in the rear portion of the car and on the ferry lying on Olivia’s blanket on the floor.

They were quite apprehensive of me and with all the loud noises in the center of Boston where we live, but after weeks of walking the same route, following Olivia, they became less scared and now are like glue. Initially they were a lot of work, untrained for bathroom habits or dragging me while walking on a leash, although eating was not a concern, 10 seconds flat, cookies are what encourages them to do everything I ask!

Despite Olivia hoping they were only “visiting” she grew excited to run to the kitchen each morning to see them. I paid for DNA and wasn’t surprised to find they are SISTERS! Blond Twinkle and Black Sparkle, the only related indication is their curled tails. However, good they weren’t separated, they sleep on top or next to each other, play, dancing around on their back legs, chewing on each other not resulting in scratches or punctures, just exuberant playing.

First time we visited our summer home on the North Shore was amazing, the Beach was empty, I let them off leash, they become speed demons, running in circles after each other with Olivia cutting across the circle to catch up. Twinkle would crouch to attack, finding it difficult to catch Sparkle with her longer legs, but trying her best. They faithfully returned to me with “Let’s go girls” and cookies upon our return.
They have come a long way, know the routine, sit at the corners to cross the streets, play at the
Carleton Court Dog Park here and East Hampton Dog park off leash, walk on the prowl for bunnies or squirrels, following Olivia on our usual route.

Each time we visit East Hampton, we stop by the ARF Shelter enjoying how your staff comments how well they look, along with the Thrift Shop to see Gary. I will say, I haven’t smiled or laughed so much in a long time, probably years with these two “love bugs”!

Thanks so much for providing such a loving environment for these pets for people like us looking to adopt and show love to rescued pets.”

GiGi’s Love – Est. 2008

My family and I adopted GiGi winter of 2008. It was up to me to choose who was the right fit for us. I was just 8 years old. I wanted the smartest dog we could find. GiGi was a silly girl with a unique build. She was a chunky beagle/red heeler mix (we think). GiGi spent 8 long months waiting for me to find her after ARF found her tied to a bench in the middle of NYC. She knew how to fetch the stick I had thrown for her just outside the entrance of ARF. That was it. She was the one.

GiGi and I quickly grew inseparable. She would swim with me in my pool and play as “lifeguard” when things got too rowdy. She would play in the snow with me and catch snowflakes in her mouth. She also loved the duality of wearing dresses and also playing in the mud. I trained her all by myself and her intelligence never ceased to amaze me. She knew every trick in the book including my favorites, her “happy dance” and would “hug” whenever I cried to her.

We spent 15 beautiful years of life together. She was there when I had no one and she was my angel before she even became one. She was there during the most influential years of my life. Without GiGi, my life would not be as rich as it is today. She left my side and crossed the rainbow bridge during one of her favorite seasons and the one we had met in, winter of 2022. With a fresh blanket of snow on the ground, she said her goodbyes. Not a day goes by where I don’t think about her. I will never forget her beautiful brown eyes or the way her paw and ears felt in my hands. Without ARF, I would never have met my truest and bestest friend. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for that.
