In honor of “National Feral Cat Day” on Sunday, October 16, 98 community (feral) cats were neutered in one day on Friday, October 14 through our Operation Cat Program. The program provides free spay/neuter surgeries and vaccinations for feral cats in the area. Volunteers from Brookhaven Town and beyond trapped cats at various locations and brought them to the ARF Mobile Spay/Neuter Van which was stationed at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and also to the ARF Adoption Center in Wainscott. A total of 58 females and 40 males were spayed/neutered by Dr. Frank Zeoli on the van in Brookhaven and Dr. Christine Asaro at the Adoption Center, with support from the ARF medical team.
The mass trapping was part of ARF’s Operation Cat program, one of the leading Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) programs in New York, which has recently has expanded west into Brookhaven. “We are grateful for all the wonderful volunteers who spearheaded this effort by trapping and transporting these community cats, especially this time of year, preventing the cats from having their fall litters,” says Rita Del Rey, ARF’s Operation Cat Coordinator.
The program is now booking dates for free spay/neuter surgeries in November. Appointments must be made in advance. For more information on a surgical appointment or to volunteer for the program contact Rita Del Rey at 631-537-0400 x210 or email email@example.com.
